Cheap Teen Auto Insurance -- Ways Your Kid Can Help
So your teen is now old enough to drive? While this should be a joyful moment, many parents remember it with some mixed feelings. Mixed feelings because the family budget is about to spiral up. Sure, you'd spend more on gas now. Worse still is the fact that the family's auto insurance spend is going to increase by as much as three times just because of one driver -- albeit their beloved kid. Thankfully, it's NOT like the weather. You can do more than complain. You can take sure steps to pay less. Let's take a look at them...
Because of time and space constraint, I'll give you a list of several tips (I'll only dwell on one)...
1. Let your kid pay at least part of the bill if they must drive. If you do this, you'll find that your teen will be more like to take any advice from you that will help them drive down their payments (And such usually keep them safer too).
2. You don't really need collision/comprehensive coverage types on old cars. So, if it won't break your teen's heart, let him/her be made the secondary driver on your oldest car.
3. Let your kid learn to drive at a driving school and NOT on their own. If they did learn on their own, let them take a course in defensive driving. Beyond the fact that insurers will reward such with lower rates, your kid would be the safer for it.
4. Encourage your teen to maintain straight A's or a minimum of B's. Insurers believe their is a correlation between recklessness and poor grades.
5. Let your teen use a car that has a high safety rating.
6. Whenever they can, let your teen use the public transport system. Lower mileage means cheaper rates. This is without counting the precious dollars you'd save on gas.
7. Teens grew up with the internet and so are usually very good at finding their way around it. Therefore, put them to good use...
More often than NOT, your teen will more gladly shop for auto insurance quotes from a wide range of insurers. They have more time on their hands and are definitely more comfortable with the internet.
Let them know that you're looking for the best rate that also gives you the right protection. They'd have to get and compare quotes from five or more quotes sites (Could be a pain for you to do but quite easy for the average teen).
They should make a list of about five of the best quotes returned. Take some time out to see their shortlist and pick which gives you the best price/value. Some folks have saved over $1,000 by doing this right.
